EXECUTIVE PRESENCE: How to Elevate Yours?

To achieve success as an executive, it is essential to possess knowledge in various areas in order to feel comfortable in interactions with other professionals such as peers, clients, and partners. There is a set of attributes and attitudes that contribute to an executive’s image, credibility, and influence.

In our executive mentoring processes, we often encounter the demand for a competency we call “executive presence.” However, the question arises: how can we translate this competency into observable and practical behaviors?

The points we present provide an opportunity for self-assessment and guidance to those seeking significant professional growth or preparing for executive positions. However, it is important to note that it is impractical and even unnecessary to master every aspect of today’s corporate world.

  1. Economy: Understand basic economic concepts such as supply and demand, inflation, interest rates, international trade, financial markets, and investments.
  2. Politics: Possess knowledge of government policies affecting the market, such as taxation, regulation, and labor laws. It is equally important to stay updated on global political events that may impact business decisions.
  3. Geography: Familiarize yourself with major international markets, their cultures, and commercial relationships between countries. Understanding physical geography, including terrain, climate, and natural resources, can help identify business opportunities in different regions of the world.
  4. History: Have knowledge of historical events that have shaped the market, such as economic crises and changes in international politics. Understanding the evolution of technologies and business models can also be valuable.
  5. Etiquette: Possess knowledge of business etiquette, good communication practices, and behavior in corporate events. Knowing how to conduct oneself in meetings, presentations, and social situations can make a difference in interactions with other executives.
  6. Locations: Be familiar with major business centers, trade fairs, and industry events worldwide. It is also important to understand local cultures and have skills in international negotiation.
  7. Readings: Familiarize yourself with leadership and management classics and stay informed about industry’s latest releases.
  8. Current Affairs: Stay informed about major news and relevant events.

In addition to these knowledge areas, it is important to develop skills in effective communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork. Being willing to continuously learn and adapt to market changes is crucial.
